Student Spotlight: Owen Hanson

Junior Hockey Player and Humanitarian Award Winner

Owen Hanson is one of ALVS’s 2022 student-athlete graduates. He plays the Forward position for the Minot Minotauros in North Dakota in the North American Hockey League. As a student-athlete, Owen had a very busy schedule trying to juggle schoolwork, practices, and games, but he still found the time to do what he loves – giving back to his community.

Owen is not only a great team player for the Minotauros on the ice, but also a great teammate off the ice. He spends much of his free time volunteering and mentoring other hockey players, which is a big part of the reason why he was awarded the Humanitarian of the Year award.

Owen recently received the Humanitarian of the Year Award for his dedication and services throughout the community of Minot. Owen was an instructor to middle school hockey players for Edge Up Hockey, which is a hockey skill development training program. As an instructor, Owen was responsible for organizing, coaching, and mentoring the young hockey players 4-5 days a week on the ice.

He is very actively involved as a volunteer with Prairie Grit Adaptive Sports Organization which is a non-profit organization with the mission of providing sports opportunities for youth and adults living with physical and mental disabilities to enhance their quality of life. He spent countless hours playing wheelchair basketball, sled hockey, and gymnastics with athletes from 5 years old to adults.

Owen’s family is originally from Minot, North Dakota but moved to Fargo, ND a few years ago. When he was drafted to play for Minotauros, he was happy to have the opportunity to head back home to Minot. Being a part of the amazing Minotauros program and having the opportunity to give back to his community has always been a dream of Owens.

Now that he has graduated, Owen plans on staying in Minot to play two more years of junior hockey while continuing to give back to where it all began for him. After that, his hope is to play Division 1 Hockey.

ALVS is so proud to recognize our student-athlete graduates and is looking forward to following his hockey career and impact on his community.
